Go With the Flow & You’ll Gather Momentum Along the Way
Written by Katie Tallo.Life is like running. You can fuel up, stretch, and psyche yourself up all you want, but often, you just have to go with the flow. It’s going to unfold how it unfolds. There’ll be hills, road blocks, pain, distractions, and sudden bursts of energy along the way, but if you go with the flow, you’ll have enough momentum to carry you wherever it is you want to go. You’ll also enjoy the scenery along the way.
Here are a few tips on going with the flow:
Breathe. Often we get carried away, excited, overwhelmed and forget to pause, breathe and begin again. Sometimes catching our breath is all we need to help us find more ease.
Challenge yourself. Push yourself, go farther, do more than the minimum. Momentum loves a challenge and you’ll amaze yourself as you go a little bit farther every day.
Get in a rhythm. There’s a thing called a runner’s high when you’re suddenly floating along in a wonderful rhythm that seems almost effortless. In life, we can achieve that same high, if we just keep moving forward, step by step, doing what we love.
Pace yourself. Moving forward doesn’t mean full steam ahead. Pacing yourself is key to gathering momentum. Slowing down when you’ve done too much, speeding up when you’ve gotten lazy. Get a feel for your pace and shift gears if you need to.
Keep going. There are always moments when we feel like giving up. Our legs are weak, our mind is wandering, our energy is dragging. If we push through these moments, we eventually come out the other side with a renewed energy that comes from the simple fact that we didn’t give up.
Enjoy the view. Look around at your world as it rushes by. Check it out or you’ll miss half the fun and beauty of getting wherever it is you’re going.
Rest. Part of going with the flow is recognizing that it ebbs. Flow is not full-on, one way, non-stop. Flow twists and slows. Accept when things don’t go as planned. Rest when you feel the need.
I’m going to go for a run now. I’m going to breath deeply, challenge myself, and hopefully find my rhythm. It might not be the best run, but I’ll move forward, take it slow, enjoy it and gather momentum along the way.
Let it flow!
